Providers to Choose Type of Tenancy
Social landlords will be given discretion over whether to introduce fixed-term tenancies, the housing minister said at a fringe event at the Liberal Democrat conference in Liverpool. Grant Shapps said the government would allow tenure to vary in different areas according to local housing conditions. He said that housing providers would be able to choose what sort of tenancy to offer future applicants, and that in some areas it would be appropriate to create lifetime tenancies. He flatly denied newspaper reports that the government was planning a review of the right to buy, claiming that it was a ‘drop in the ocean’, and that tenure reform was much more important.
