Scrapping Security of Tenure ‘Will Not Solve Housing Crisis’
Ending tenancy for life will not solve the UK’s housing crisis, a think tank close to the Conservative party has suggested. A report from Policy Exchange proposes a housing policy overhaul, which it says could save around £20 billion a year by lower housing benefit costs and by encouraging unemployed social tenants into work. But it describes recent discussions over ending security of tenure for social tenants – mooted by the prime minister last month – as a ‘mistake’. The report says: ‘For younger tenants, since it would be a review every few years, this would also fail to tackle the real issue at the root of their problems – the incentives facing social tenants who are trapped in their sector by high private housing costs.
