Developer Wants Office Staff To Return Despite Government Guidance


A property development company behind some of London’s most prestigious developments has told staff they could be asked to return to the office, even if they can do their job from home. Galliard Homes sent a memo to staff outlining the conditions under which it intends to resume operations as lockdown restrictions begin to ease. The Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document also includes a section under the heading: “Why am I being told to return to the office when the guidance is still clearly if you can work from home, do so?” The response is that government guidance “specifically references easing the burden on public transport”. Osborne Misses 'Open Goal' On Housing Crisis

One group who will be happy that taxpayers money will now pay for developers to build houses are those who run the companies themselves. Coincidentally, some of those companies, and the people that run them, have been rather generous donors to the Conservative Party over the years. According to the Electoral Commission website, since 2001 at least £4million has flowed in the Tory coffers from businesses such as Wates Group, Aggregate Industries and IM Properties. Local Authorities to Form Their Own Housing Development Firms

English local authorities will be at the forefront of a new wave of housebuilding with a Treasury review set to recommend more councils establish their own development companies. At least four councils have put in place plans to establish their own housebuilding companies since December alone, with a leading consultant saying that many more are looking to follow suit. Work will be put out to tender rather than carried out in-house, creating a major new income stream for contractors. The review of local authority housing, due to be unveiled this month, is expected to promote the use of such firms as a means of easing the housing crisis.
