RTB Cash Alternative 'Had Limited Take-Up'

A government fund offering a cash alternative to tenants eligible for the Right to Buy has had limited take-up despite councils’ efforts to promote it. The Right to Buy Social Mobility Fund was announced by George Osborne in a major speech a year ago and aimed to help council tenants eligible for the Right to Buy to buy an alternative home on the open market if they needed or wanted to. It was targeted at helping people whose current home was not suitable to their needs, or whose home was difficult to mortgage, as well as people needing to move for work or family reasons. The fund offered a cash payment of £20,000 across England and £30,000 in London. However, there has been limited take-up of the fund, which is being axed a year early at the end of March. Council Looks To Safeguard Its Housing From Right To Buy

No council wants to lose their housing stock, especially when social housing becomes increasingly scarce. Barking and Dagenham have offered 40 of their tenants a £40,000 cash payment in place of their Right to Buy discount. The council tenants would have to buy a home on the open market by 31st March in a scheme known as ‘Right to Buy Social Mobility’. The £40,000 cash payment will be used toward the open market purchase of the house, meaning the council stock remains with the council. Read more on 24dash.

New Fund Will Help More Tenants to Become Homeowners

Council tenants unable to take up their Right to Buy will have the help they need to become homeowners under plans announced by Brandon Lewis. The Housing Minister announced that 42 councils will each receive a share of nearly £20 million to help tenants with the Right to Buy to buy their own home on the open market. The Right to Buy Social Mobility Fund will particularly help those looking to move for work, to be nearer to family, or those whose properties are difficult to mortgage. The Fund will allow tenants to apply for £20,000 outside London, or £30,000 in the Capital, towards buying a new home. Just under half of the fund has already been allocated to local authorities. One third of councils receiving a slice of the Right to Buy Social Mobility Fund are London boroughs, according to a list of successful bidders. Read more on the CLG website.
