Calls To End No-Fault Evictions

The London Assembly agreed a motion calling on the Mayor of London to back the campaign to abolish section 21 and to lobby the government for a change in the law. Sian Berry AM, who proposed the motion, said:  “The Assembly has firmly put its weight behind Generation Rent’s campaign to end section 21. London renters need to feel secure in their homes and know they can’t be thrown out on the streets for no reason. Having to move at short notice is one of the worst parts of being a private renter and ending section 21 would make a dramatic difference and solve this problem – it would also align our policies with other countries.” Read more on 24housing.

London’s 2m Private Renters ‘Let Down’ Over Spiralling Costs

London’s mayor has been challenged to “do more” in helping the capital’s two million private renters to support themselves and keep rent rises down. Green London Assembly Member Sian Berry laid down that challenge to Sadiq Khan. Drawing on results from her survey of more than 1,500 London renters, Berry asked the Mayor what support London’s one million private rented households could expect, especially on costs, and for help with setting up a renters’ organisation for London that builds upon current renting groups and campaigns. In response, the Mayor said he had no plans to continue to seek further powers over rents on existing homes or to offer practical support to renters groups. Read more on the 24Housing website.

Cameron Is Refusing EU Funds To Help Homeless

Green mayoral candidate Sian Berry has accused David Cameron of “inhumanity” for refusing to use EU funds to help homeless people in London.  Ms Berry used her party’s spring conference speech to attack the Prime Minister’s decision not to draw down funds from a £2.5 billion pot that could help destitute migrants. Campaigners believe the Government should use the Fund for European Aid to the Most Deprived which helps member countries provide material assistance to the most deprived. She told supporters: “David Cameron actually opted the UK out of this scheme in 2013, and has refused to apply again despite pleas from poverty campaigners across the country.” Read more on the Evening Standard website.
