Number Of New Home Registrations Slowed In Third Quarter

The number of new homes being registered slowed down in the third quarter of this year, according to industry figures. There were 39,364 registrations – down by 9% compared with the same period a year earlier, the National House Building Council (NHBC) said. The NHBC is a warranty and insurance provider, covering around 80% of new homes built in the UK. Builders register homes to be built in the coming weeks or months – so the figures are an indicator of the level of new housing supply in the pipeline. The year-on-year fall in registrations was driven by home registrations in the private sector. Read more on the Yahoo Finance website.

Regulator Publishes Fees Statement Setting Out Priorities

The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) introduced a fee system this month under which providers pay a one-off registration fee of £2,500 and, if they own more than 1,000 homes, an annual fee of £4.72 per home. Providers with fewer than 1,000 homes pay a flat fee of £300 a year. The statement sets out the HCA’s regulatory priorities and gives a breakdown of how the regulator’s £7.5m budget will be spent. The regulator intends to make more use of automated data analysis, invest in its staff through recruitment and training and prepare to become a standalone regulator once the legislation has been passed in parliament. Demand For Retirement Homes In UK Slows

The uptake of retirement housing in the UK softened in the second quarter of this year as many downsizers paused plans ahead of the European Union referendum vote, according to the latest quarterly review. Overall new buyer registrations for retirement properties slipped by over 20% from the first quarter to 4,744, a 30% fall on the same period last year, as uncertainty before the referendum slowed the market. However, the data from retirement property specialist Retirement Homesearch, also shows that the number of property viewings at 2,974 and instructions at 513 remained steady on first quarter numbers, showing that registered buyers are still actively looking to downsize.  Read more on the Property Wire website.

The first set of significant house building figures since then have just been published. They are from the National House Building Council - which provides building certificates for new homes. And they make for pretty gloomy reading. Overall, registrations for new homes fell by 2% in the last three months compared with the same period last year. In the private sector, new building registrations fell by 1%. While in the public sector - that's largely homes built by housing associations which tend to be more often in the "affordable" category - the number was down a more precipitate 4%.
