John Healey MP IPPR Speech: The Home Of The Future

Date of speech 10 November 2009 (extract only below)
Location Governor's House, London

When we're planning for the future, we have to plan for what we can't expect. That's a tricky idea to accept when you're formulating public policy. I am acutely aware that the decisions I take as Housing Minister will having lasting effects on generations to come. That's quite a responsibility. Nye Bevan, as Housing Minister, said: 'While we shall be judged for a year or two by the number of houses we build, we shall be judged in ten years' time by the type of houses we build'. I would add to that 'we will be judged in a generation's time by the environmental standard of the houses we build'.
