Social Landlords ‘Put Lone Staff At Risk’

The safety of a growing number of housing staff is being jeopardised because they are being asked to work alone with potentially dangerous tenants, the UK’s biggest union, Unite, has warned. Charity Mental Health Matters was fined £30,000 for failing to ensure the safety of a support worker who was stabbed to death in 2006 by a social housing tenant being visited in his own home. The Health and Safety Executive, which brought the prosecution, said Mental Health Matters had not updated its risk assessment of the tenant to take account of warning signs which could have indicated deterioration of his mental health.
