The Labour government did more damage to the housing industry "than the Luftwaffe", Eric Pickles has claimed. The CLG Secretary said the previous administration had resulted in the lowest number of houses being built in a year since 1946. Labour former local government minister Nick Raynsford said that projections showed that there will be a cumulative shortfall of over a million homes within five years. Mr Pickles told him: "For the Labour Party to be concerned about housing numbers seems to be perverse because, after all, last year was the lowest number of houses built since 1946. "Under Labour it would appear more damage was done to the housing industry than the Luftwaffe did." Junior minister Andrew Stunell sparked Opposition anger when he blamed 13 years of Labour government for a £3.2 billion "backlog to bring decent homes to all social housing".
