The private rented sector will become a bigger form of tenure than social housing within the next three years, according to new projections. The Building and Social Housing Foundation has published research which predicts the private rented sector could overtake social housing in size by 2013, and that by the end of the decade, one in five households could be privately rented. There are currently 3.8 million private rented homes and 4.5 million social homes in the UK. The report, Tenure trends in the UK housing system, warned that renting privately could also become the tenure of last resort because the change is partly driven by a lack of other options.
