Nottingham council is to move tenants out of a 15-storey tower block after spending a quarter of a million pounds on fire safety at the building. Nottinghamshire fire authority started focusing on fire safety in tower blocks after a fatal blaze at a south London high-rise, Lakanal House, last year. The fire authority served ALMO Nottingham City Homes with an enforcement notice in September 2009 for breaches of fire safety regulation at the slab-style Highcross Court block in Radford. The 1966 building is a ‘scissor style’ design – the same as Lakanal House. Steve Hale, assistant director of property services at Nottingham City Homes said: ‘We’ve invested more than £250,000 to improve the alarm system and carry out other work to make Highcross Court safe.’ The block needs around £1.1 million spent on it and Mr Hale explained ‘this cost cannot be justified’. The fire service wants the block to be vacated by April next year and decommissioning to start this month. Read more on the BBC website.
