Social housing bodies are calling on the government to invest £9.5 billion in building affordable homes in its spending review this autumn. A joint submission to the comprehensive spending review from the NHF, the CIH and the National Federation of ALMOs says the sum would attract £12.6 billion from housing associations, delivering 150,000 homes over the four year period of the review. It states the £9.5 billion investment would be a 15 per cent drop in nominal terms and a 25 per cent drop in real terms compared to current levels. It argues every pound spent on house building secures £1.40 in output across the economy as a whole. On housing benefit, a key area the government has identified for cuts, the submission calls for a pilot to test the effectiveness of transition to work payments. Read more on Inside Housing.
