One in Ten Social Homes Are Underoccupied

One in ten social homes are underoccupied, according to figures from home exchange agency Homeswapper, which estimates that more than 10 per cent of social housing has one or more bedrooms unused, amounting to 436,000 homes across the UK. Homeswapper said there are 1.8 million households on social housing waiting lists, and 2.3 million people living in overcrowded homes in England. A report released earlier this week by the National Housing Federation, Chartered Institute of Housing and former East of England Regional Assembly found 7 per cent of social homes in the east of England are underoccupied.
