‘Social Model’ Under Financial Threat

The viability of the social housing model is under threat because of the financial pressures facing the sector, according to a new study from leading academics. Professor Ian Cole and research fellow Ryan Powell of Sheffield Hallam University came to the conclusion in a report about the future of ALMOs. The study warned that financial pressure on the sector could threaten the ability of ALMOs and other housing providers to carry out work beyond basic landlord duties. The authors interviewed 17 ALMO chief executives on the future challenges for the sector. They found the primary concerns were future funding streams and their relationship with their parent council. Mr Powell said that, in the context of constrained public spending, some ALMOs might find it difficult to justify the community work they carry out. Read more on Inside Housing.
