Think Tank Issues Gypsy Warning

Councils should not ignore the need for Gypsy and Traveller sites just because national targets have been scrapped, a think tank has warned. The Local Government Information Unit briefing says councils will ‘store up problems for the future’ if they put the issue ‘to the bottom of the pile’. The CLG has made it clear that it is up to local authorities to decide what provision is needed in their area, after axing regional spatial strategies. The LGiU’s Gypsies and Travellers: impact of changes in the planning system paper states: ‘It will be important that councils properly reflect the provision they need to make for Gypsy and Traveller sites – whether permanent, temporary or transit, publicly or privately provided – when bidding for funding for their housing programmes.’ It suggests adopting a strategic approach to identify suitable sites, providing information to communities on the extent and limits they are entitled to and improving enforcement procedures.
