Councils Split Over Fixed-Term Tenancies

Town halls across England will resist the government’s controversial social housing reforms by refusing to scrap tenancy for life, a snapshot survey has revealed. In a sign that the national Liberal Democrat leadership is falling out of step with local parties, some senior councillors have pledged to eschew the fixed-term tenancies the coalition government plans to introduce next year. Lib Dem housing portfolio holders or council leaders said they were against the introduction of short-term tenancies, seven said they were undecided and just one supported the reforms.
