Local Authorities Allow Fewer House Builds, Says HBF

Planning permissions granted by local authorities to build new homes have dropped to one of the lowest levels for five years. A quarterly report published by the Home Builders Federation shows that there were 30,000 planning permissions granted in England for the third quarter of 2010, down 25 per cent on the first quarter of the year. The number of approvals for the third quarter of 2010 is in contrast to a quarterly average of 64,500 approvals during 2006 and 2007. This compares to a low of 25,200 residential units approved during the second quarter of 2009. Currently the country has a housing shortfall estimated to be a million homes, and last year saw the lowest number built since 1923, according to the HBF. Read more on Inside Housing.
