There are 7,000 long-term empty homes in Leeds, but Leeds
Empties is striving to unlock their potential. Ahead of his session at Homes
2013, co-director Rob Greenland explains how the scheme is working. Leeds
Empties began with a call to action in May 2012, where more than 100 people
came together to explore ways to bring more of Leeds’ long-term empty homes
back into use. We took ideas from that day and developed them further during a
six-month pilot – which led to us securing a 12 month contract in April this
year with Leeds City Council to bring more of the city’s 7,000 long-term empty
homes – 90% of which are privately owned – back into use. Most of our time is spent delivering our
empty homes doctor service – one-to-one support for owners of empty properties.
