Landlords are prematurely terminating assured shorthold
tenancies at an ‘alarming’ rate and increasing homelessness in London,
according to a new report. There has been a four-fold rise in the number of
premature terminations since 2010, from 300 to more than 1,400 per quarter, the
London Assembly housing committee found. The committee’s report said these
terminations are increasing the proportion of statutory homelessness in the
city. The report, Assessing the
consequences of welfare reform, also said that the majority of landlords
are becoming more reluctant to rent to residents who are entitled to housing
benefits; the report estimated that these attitudes affect one-third of
claimants. Download a copy of the report
