Iain Duncan Smith has said continuing to pay for
properties with spare bedrooms would have cost the equivalent of £32 for every
household in the country. He pointed to figures showing that the numbers hit by
the bedroom tax were falling by 4,000 a month, as those affected either
obtained work or voluntarily downsized their property to adjust to the reforms.
The saving amounts to £1 million a day, the cost of hiring 18,000 nurses or
13,000 police officers a year. Mr Duncan Smith added that the reforms, which
apply to tenants in social housing such as council homes, restored “fairness”
to the system. Read more on the Daily Telegraph website.
