Asked by Lord Hylton: To ask Her Majesty’s Government how
much brownfield land they have identified as being suitable for house building,
and in particular for building social housing; and what proportion of the total
is situated in areas with a current housing shortage.
Baroness Williams of Trafford: We estimate that capacity
exists for around 200,000 homes on brownfield sites that are suitable and
viable for housing, in areas where sufficient demand exists, and irrespective
of tenure. To improve the availability and transparency of data on brownfield
land, we have announced our intention to require local authorities to maintain
a register of brownfield land suitable for housing.
