Letting agents are exploiting a “captive market” when it
comes to the fees they charge to tenants, says Generation Rent, prompting the
campaign group to urge the Government to ban them. The organisation says its
research into more than 700 agents from across the country has thrown up wide
variations in fees charged for what are “essentially standard services”. In the
organisation’s view, this “indicates that many letting agents are charging disproportionate
fees to a captive market”. With the Government failing to cater for an ever
larger renter population paying ever higher costs, tenants are taking improving
the housing market into their own hands, the organisation said. Read more on
