Housing associations are well-placed to help the middle
class achieve home ownership if they are given the political backing – and the
public money – to do so, according to the National Housing Federation (NHF).
The number of middle class first-time buyers has fallen “precipitously”, the
organization said, as it revealed that even earning a top salary is no longer
enough to buy a home – family wealth to help them with the deposit is also needed.
Analysis of English Housing Survey data, carried out for the 100,000 Affordable
Homes for London campaign, reveals that almost a third of “top-earning”
first-time buyers got a gift or a loan from their families for a deposit. This
figure has risen 11% in under a decade, the NHF claims. Read more on the
