An All Party Parliamentary Group says every Universal
Credit (UC) tenant should have the option of direct payments to their landlord
from the start of the claim. For claimants with a history of rent arrears or
debt, direct payments should be by default to ensure they are able to secure a
tenancy, the Group says. In the resulting report, the Group urges the DWP
to inform landlords of this system in order to avoid people unnecessarily
falling into rent arrears, and do “all that it can” to facilitate separate
payments in Scotland, as agreed by the Scottish government, so that the
Department can learn from their experience in developing its own policy. Read
