The government must carry out an urgent review of the
rules around green belt land to help address London’s acute housing crisis, a
new report has argued. With the capital needing 65,000 new homes a year to cope
with demand, business group London First, together with consultancy Community
Research, convened a jury of 12 Londoners to discuss the green belt. Both sides
of the debate about building on such land gave evidence and a resulting
vote found 11 members of the jury agreeing that some form of review of the
rules governing the green belt was needed to address what it called “a terrible
