Council Lodges Appeal Against High Court Ruling On Residential Wardens

Barnet Council has lodged an application seeking permission to appeal the High Court decision on the local authority's plans to end a residential warden's service in sheltered accommodation. Under the council's proposals the residential service tied to each sheltered housing scheme would be replaced by a new 'floating' service covering the whole borough. While the judgment expressly stated that the council decision was not necessarily incorrect and that the council had consulted widely and amended policy in the wake of consultation, Barnet was criticised for not demonstrating that all members of Cabinet fully considered their duties under the Disability Discrimination Act.
