Government Considers Ombudsman Merger

The government is considering merging the Housing Ombudsman Service (HOS) with the local government ombudsman. Grant Shapps is understood to be considering creating a single service for social landlords which would fund itself through charges levied on landlords. The HOS is due to take responsibility for all complaints against social landlords under plans to abolish the TSA, as announced by the housing minister. Sources familiar with the situation said the merger would have the benefit of removing direct government responsibility for funding the local government ombudsman. This week, the two ombudsman services launched an unconnected formal protocol on how they will work together to refer cases across services. Read more on Inside Housing.
