Housing Crisis Requires Green Belt Land

The green belt should no longer be protected to enable more homes to be built, according to one of the speakers at the CIH conference in Harrogate. Speaking in the main auditorium, financial journalist Paul Lewis told the conference the only way to solve the housing crisis is to build more homes. He said: ‘Every figure we have shows there are too few homes for people who need them. The only solution is to build more homes, we are not planning to do it. If it was up to me the green belt would no longer be secured, that may be an unpopular view.’ Mr Lewis also said reintroducing security of tenure and rent controls for the private sector would reduce the need for homeownership, as tenants would have more security and reasonable rents.
