Council Offers Amnesty to Sub-Letters

Harrow Council is giving illegal sub-letters two weeks to hand back their keys with no legal action before a crackdown. Any outstanding rents must be paid but anyone illegally sub-letting who hands in their keys between 23 August and 6 September will not face prosecution. The amnesty comes three months after Essex Council employed a similar tactic, leading to eight properties being returned to the local authority. Following the end of the amnesty, Harrow’s housing and fraud team will work together to investigate fraud. Anyone who is still illegally sub-letting faces prosecution. The council said it expects a ‘number’ of properties to be returned. Read more on Inside Housing.
