The Government has welcomed new figures showing there was
an increase in the construction of new homes last year, but the figures remain
far below the widely accepted 240,000 needed to tackle the housing crisis,
while the number of starts delivered by housing associations has shown a marked
decline. Annual housing starts in England reached 137,010 in the 12 months to
December 2014, according to the latest figures from the ONS, an 10% increase on
the year before. Meanwhile, the number
of homes that were completed in England in the same period reached 118,760, an
increase of 8% on the previous 12 months.
