Government Should Set Target Of 75,000 Modular Homes Per Year By 2030

 A target of 75,000 homes per year should be set for the modular housing sector, a new report by a major government advisor has found. Co-authored by Mark Farmer, the government’s modern methods of construction (MMC) champion, and Mike De’Ath, partner at HTA Design, Build Homes Build Jobs Build Innovation calls on the government to make modular the driving force behind its ‘build, build, build’ agenda. HAs Must Commit To Modular Under Affordable Homes Programme

Housing associations that sign up to ‘strategic partnerships’ under the government’s new £11.5bn Affordable Homes Programme (AHP) will have to deliver 25 per cent of their pipeline using modern methods of construction (MMC). The move is part of a government effort to put modular housebuilding at the heart of the new five-year AHP programme as it aims to speed up delivery. Government Takes Another Hit On 300,000-Homes Target

The government has taken another hit on its 300,000-homes-a-year target, with the Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee (HCLGC) warning an over-reliance on traditional building methods will see the UK fall far short of such numbers. The Commons Public Accounts Committee told MHCLG to “get a grip” on progressing the housing target, with the resulting report saying the Ministry had no clear plan to make 300,000-homes-a-year happen. In the report, MCLGC has urged the government to unlock the potential for modern methods of construction (MMC) to build homes quicker, more cheaply, while maintaining build quality. Commons Inquiry Launched Into Modern Methods Of Construction

The Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee has launched a new inquiry into Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) and its potential role in boosting housing supply. According to the government’s Industrial Strategy, MMC has the potential to reform the residential construction sector toward a target of 300,000 new homes each year, and one million between 2017 and 2020. The government has identified inconsistent demand in the housing sector and lack of collaborative construction supply chains in expanding MMC practices. In a previous inquiry, the committee found increased use of MMC would require greater government support to give “lenders, consumers and builders the confidence to use new methods”.
