Report Reinforces Future For Community-Led Housing In London

With London’s councils struggling under the weight of housing targets, a new report reveals the potential for community-led housing in the capital. Future of London (FoL) says community-led schemes can rebuild trust in the development system. The report draws on the expertise and experience of more than 250 representatives from community groups, boroughs, developers, architects, and investors brought together through FoL’s year-long Foundations for Community-led Housing project. Community-Led Housing Could Increase Housing Supply

The Housing Commission on Community-Led Housing is launching its report, ‘Community-Led Housing: a Key Role for Local Authorities’. Set up by the Co-operative Councils’ Innovation Network, the commission’s practical approach is aimed at promoting good practice and innovation to enable councils to work with communities to generate more affordable housing and make best use of government funding for community-led housing. The report is timely because of DCLG’s relaunched Community Housing Fund in England and funding for community-led housing provided by the Welsh and Scottish governments. Boost For Community Led Housing Schemes

A scheme is underway to give community led housing schemes a boost in an effort to demonstrate how this can become a viable means of delivering more homes. Locality has selected 22 community groups around England for specialist help to start up their own community-led housing projects as part of a new programme to encourage communities to build housing for themselves.  All over the country communities are quietly “rebelling” against the housing crisis by building their own, Locality says. Through the new Early Stage Support programme, the organisation hopes to show that communities building their own housing is a viable, mainstream option to help beat the housing crisis and provide much-needed quality, affordable housing for neighbourhoods in need.
