Cladding Tax Is ‘Laughable’, Says Property Developer

Taxing developers to help pay for cladding remediation work is “laughable” the chair of a development firm has said. Andrew Southern, chair of developer Southern Grove, has criticised the government’s plan to introduce a new development levy in an attempt to alleviate the crisis that has seen thousands of leaseholders hit with extortionate bills to rectify historic issues with their buildings. Mr Southern said: “Why should a company that has never installed dangerous cladding, and perhaps never built high-rise blocks in the past, be tarred with the same brush and penalised when they’re no more responsible for this scandal than those in other sectors building cars, running our hospitals and educating our children?” Read more on Inside Housing.

New Stamp Duty Charge Could Free Up Competition For UK Landlords

Renters Quizzed In Relation To Landlords’ Tax Affairs

A HMRC ‘fact finding letter’ suggests tenants may have to take tax off their own rental payments to ensure the correct tax is paid if their landlord is not resident in the UK – and is not registered under the UK’s Non-resident Landlord Scheme (NRL) – or face a fine. The HMRC letters come with a form which asks the tenants for information about the property, such as whether it is owned by a trust and, if so, the date it was acquired by a trust, and details about the trustees, settlors and beneficiaries. Welfare Report from Thatcherite Think-Tank Blasted As 'Spin' By TUC

A report claiming over half of UK households get more in benefits than they pay in taxes is “extremely misleading” as it includes pensioners, according to the TUC. The latest Economic Bulletin from the Thatcherite think-tank the Centre for Policy Studies (CPS) claims 51.5 per cent of households receive more from the state than they pay in tax. The report comes just over a week before Chancellor George Osborne unveils his latest Budget, in which details of a further £12billion of welfare cuts will be announced.
