Greens Pledge to Plough £4 Billion into Social Housing

The Green Party would launch a £4 billion social housing programme and focus on expanding the role of council delivery if it came to power. In its manifesto the party promised to allow councils to use receipts from sales to fund new affordable homes. It said it would provide £2 billion in 2010, rising to £4 billion in 2011, to councils to expand social housing ‘mainly through conversion and renovation’. This would create 80,000 jobs, it claimed.
