Housing Benefit Plans Stir Rebellion among Lib Dem Backbenchers

The coalition government is facing the prospect of Liberal Democrat MPs voting against controversial housing benefit cuts unless it waters them down. It is facing growing discontent from Liberal Democrats over the proposals, which include reducing housing benefit by 10 per cent for people who have claimed jobseekers’ allowance for more than a year. Lib Dem London spokesperson Tom Brake told Inside Housing he had been lobbying ‘colleagues who are in a position to influence’, including work and pensions secretary Iain Duncan Smith, work and pensions minister Steve Webb and communities minister Andrew Stunell. Mr Brake said he wanted the 10 per cent reduction and the cap of £400 a week for four or more bedroom properties to change. Read more on Inside Housing.
