Last week Eric Pickles announced an end to "heavy handed rules" that can mean people who leave their house empty for more than six months risk having it seized by their council. It preceded an announcement this week from junior housing minister Andrew Stunell who called on residents to play their part in identifying empty homes to councils so they could use cash incentives from the Government to bring them back into use. Responding to remarks by Mr Stunell, Shadow Housing Minister, Alison Seabeck MP, said: “Bringing empty homes back into use to house local people is vitally important but Andrew Stunell is urging people to get their councils to act just days after his boss, Eric Pickles, was busy doing the media rounds announcing that he was taking powers away from local councils to deal with this very problem.
“What this government says about empty homes is nothing more than empty rhetoric after they cancelled much-needed funding for the HMR Pathfinder programme which will leave street upon street of empty homes in many parts of the country.’ Read more on 24dash.
