The Audit Commission could be open until 2014, despite ministers pledging to abolish it by the end of this year. A leaked memo from Eugene Sullivan, the chief executive of the public services inspectorate, says: ‘We are now working to a longer timetable… we think the earliest the commission will be abolished is December 2013 and possibly not until the end of 2014.’ Communities secretary Eric Pickles accused the Audit Commission of having ‘lost its way’ when he announced its closure last August. The move is expected to save £50 million a year. A spokesman from the Audit Commission said: ‘The timetable for the Audit Commission’s abolition and the introduction of a new audit regime for local public bodies rests with ministers and parliament.” Read more on Inside Housing.
