Housing associations have expressed alarm at the government’s plans for its affordable rent regime after a senior civil servant revealed that use of the new tenure will be restricted. Richard McCarthy, director general at the CLG, told a private meeting of housing professionals that landlords would only be allowed to switch half their re-let properties to the affordable rent. The government hopes the new regime - which allows landlords to charge rents of up to 80 per cent of market rates - will help it fund 150,000 affordable homes by 2015. Ministers have said previously that some re-lets would be converted but have never specified a limit. Housing associations fear that a Whitehall-imposed limit will hamper their ability to fund homes using the new model. Read more on Inside Housing.
