Winchester Council is linking with private landlords to tackle homelessness. ‘Winchester Lets’ is a one-stop service for landlords wanting to let to the waiting list and homeless people seeking housing. The scheme was given the given the green-light by the council on Wednesday 13 April. The council will lease the property from the landlord for an agreed amount and house a resident who is eligible for housing benefit and can then receive 90 per cent of local housing allowance plus a maximum of £60 a week towards associated management costs. New rules allow councils to license properties directly from private landlords to homeless people in exchange for a charge, which is covered by housing benefit. Read more on Inside Housing.
