Government Halts Home Transfer Plan

The government has scuppered a plan by Waverley Borough Council that it hoped would make some of its empty homes available to tenants. The authority wanted to transfer up to 40 of its void properties to Waverley Initiatives Limited, a company set up by the council to carry out projects to benefit people living in the borough. The plan, announced earlier this year, was for the empty homes to be transferred to the company, which could then repair them and bring them back into use. The authority needed the consent of Secretary of State for Community and Local Government, Eric Pickles, to go ahead with the transfer of the empty homes. However Mr Pickles has refused to grant the request because of the potential impact on debt redistribution in the run-up to the government’s proposed new self-financing regime.
