A survey of 71 cabinet members for housing has found that 42 per cent plan to reject the fixed-term tenancies introduced by the coalition government. Cabinet members for housing in all three main political parties said they would not introduce the shorter tenancies. Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrat housing members will also ask associations to limit the number of properties they rent under the new affordable rent regime, where money for development is raised by setting rents at up to 80 per cent of local market rent. The survey reveals Labour councils have uniformly rejected the tenure reforms included in the Localism Bill and that significant numbers of Liberal Democrat and Conservative councillors are at odds with their counterparts in government.
