Government plans to force homeless people to accept private rented housing have come under fresh fire after new figures revealed private evictions had led to a big jump in homelessness acceptances. Government figures show 1,750 households were made homeless between January and March this year as a result of their assured shorthold tenancies coming to an end. This compares with 1,250 households in the same period last year. Overall, there were 44,160 homeless acceptances over the past financial year, a 10 per cent increase on 2009/10 and the first financial year increase in seven years. The figures heightened widespread concern over the vulnerability of those dependent on short-term tenancies in private sector housing, which councils will be allowed to use as an alternative to social homes as part of the government’s controversial Localism Bill.
