A housing benefit cut that will hit 62,500 25-34 year-olds will lead to an increase in homelessness, independent research undertaken by York University has revealed. Undertaken on behalf of Crisis, the report examines the impact of Government proposals to extend a lower rate of housing benefit, the Shared Accommodation Rate, to cover people aged up to 35. Currently 25-34 year-olds are allowed to claim housing benefit based on the cost of renting a one-bedroom flat. Under changes proposed by the Coalition from 2012 they will only be able to claim enough for a room in a shared house. The research reveals that there is not enough shared accommodation available. Those affected will therefore be at high risk of becoming homeless. Read more on the Crisis website.
