The deputy prime minister has warned housing minister Grant Shapps that council cuts to supported housing budgets in England are causing vital services for vulnerable people to be scrapped. Mr Clegg said the funding reductions had resulted in ‘dramatic cuts to the services’ that South Yorkshire HA could provide. He said concerns stemmed from the removal of the SP budget ring fence in 2008 by the Labour government, allowing councils to raid the pot to fund other services. In his letter, Mr Clegg wrote that these funding pressures meant contracts were not being tendered for, or that programmes were being reduced. His letter also raised concerns about plans to pay the new universal credit directly to tenants instead of to landlords. Read more on Inside Housing.
