Houseboats Help To Increase Housing Supply

Housing minister Grant Shapps wants councils to increase planning permissions for houseboats and says new residential moorings could qualify for the Government's New Homes Bonus. Around 15,000 people live on Britain's waterways, according to the Residential Boat Owners Association. Mr Shapps says that residential moorings could be an example of how "unconventional housing" can allow people to live in areas where perhaps they couldn't afford to do so otherwise and allow councils to boost housing supply in their areas.
