The government’s controversial affordable housing programme is a one-off that will not be `repeated and repeated’, communities minister Andrew Stunell has stated. Mr Stunell was speaking at the National Housing Federation’s annual conference. The programme that the government calls ‘affordable rent’ has caused disquiet in the sector because it has pushed housing providers to stretch their assets and borrow more in order to fund development. Questions have also been raised about how affordable it is for tenants as it involves setting rents at up to 80 per cent of the market level - far higher than traditional social rents in many parts of the country. Mr Stunell acknowledged the controversy in his speech and indicated that a new model will be developed after 2015. Read more on Inside Housing.
