Up To £2,000 Available For Council Tenants to Downsize

Council house tenants in Exeter are being offered cash incentives for moving to properties with fewer bedrooms. Exeter City Council is hoping the scheme will free up some of the city's family accommodation and enable families on the housing register to move into properties that meet their requirements. From April 2013, tenants under-occupying social homes will see cuts to their housing benefit as part of Government moves to free-up accommodation for households living in overcrowded homes. A number of councils and social landlords are now offering cash incentives for tenants under-occupying their homes to downsize. Members of Exeter City Council's Scrutiny Community Committee will be asked to back a scheme that will see tenants who downsize - giving up two or more bedrooms - to receive a maximum payment of £2,000. Those who give up one bedroom will get a maximum payment of £1,500. Read more on 24dash.
