A central London council has hit out at claims that changes to housing benefit will force people onto the streets. Philippa Roe, cabinet member for strategic finance at Westminster Council, said that good transport links would allow people to travel to their jobs and schools in the centre if they were forced to move to cheaper homes on the outskirts of the capital due to cuts to their housing benefit payments. Ms Roe said: ‘I strongly predict that the predictions of people forced onto the street will be wrong. The market will rebalance. ‘If larger families have to move out strong transport links will allow children to travel to schools and friends and families to stay in touch,’ she added. Commenting on the impact of cuts to the ‘local housing allowance’ paid to support tenants in private sector accommodation, Ms Roe said: ‘Of the people affected by the caps, only 150 are vulnerable.” Read more on the Crisis website.
