The shadow housing minister has revealed that a housing association won over a council that was sceptical about affordable rent by promising it would only use the scheme to house people on benefits. A number of councils and housing associations have reached an impasse over the government’s plans for a new affordable rent. Some councils have thrown a spanner in the works by refusing to support affordable rent developments. Ms Seabeck gave the first indication this week about the way associations are attempting to end the impasse. She said local authority leaders and housing associations were both complaining about each other on the issue. But one council had now reached an agreement, she indicated. She said the council had told her ‘we are going to allow 80 per cent rents because they [the association] have assured us that the people in it will be on housing benefit’.
