An opposition amendment to 'depenalise' squatters of long-term empty homes has been defeated in the House of Commons. The proposed amendment to clause 26 of the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Bill was put forward by Labour MP John McDonnell. However, it was rejected by 300 votes to 23. Once adopted, the new legislation will make squatting in a residential building – including empty and abandoned homes - a criminal act. Homeless offenders will then face up to a year in prison and/or a £5,000 fine. Read more on 24dash.
